It is important that people with a learning disability are not labelled because of their disability nor by the organisation which supports them. The name "Thera" does not say what the organisation does.
Thera is an island in Greece, located in the Southern Aegean Sea, lying north of Crete. It is otherwise known as Santorini.
In around 1500 B.C the volcanic island erupted covering the area, Pompeii-like, in volcanic ash. The eruption is thought to have been more devastating than that of Krakatoa in 1883. The outline of the volcano can be clearly seen today.
Excavations on the site of Akrotiri, which started in 1967, uncovered the preserved remains of an ancient town. Many of the buildings in Akrotiri contained beautiful wall paintings, depicting life on Thira (note the Greek spelling) before the eruption.
One of the wall paintings is a seascape, including pictures of dolphins. This is where Thera Trust's logo comes from. The colours in the logo match the colours of the dolphins in the painting.
The seascape was found in a house which the archaeologists named "The West House". Thera's new Grantham Office is similarly named.
So, on the one hand, Thera is just a name, which doesn't label what the organisation does and gives us a distinct identity. On the other, ancient Thira had a huge impact in its day... we seek to do the same!
