Amie’s career journey throughout social care

Posted 23/02/2026

Amie works as a Practice Leader in Lincolnshire and in today’s blog we talk about her journey from working in a care home to her current role as a Practice Leader for Thera.

Amie’s career began working in a care home after her Grandad had been poorly and she saw how well they took care of him and thought that she’d give that role a go. Shortly after she decided she wanted to try something new and a friend of Amie’s recommended Thera.

Amie soon joined Thera East Midlands as a Support Worker, which was now over 9 years ago. Amie has really appreciated the flexibility the Support Worker role has to offer, particularly since having her children. As her children grew older, she increased her hours to full time but felt that she was ready for progression.

I think because I’d been a support worker for so long I knew my job inside out and felt like I needed a new challenge.

When the Practice Leader role came up, Amie thought it was a perfect opportunity to progress and pass on her knowledge to newer support workers. As part of this role Amie also planned a lot of the festive activities that she people she supports did in December last year which she found busy but also really rewarding to see how much they enjoyed all the different experiences. Alongside her role, Amie completed her NVQ and is currently working on her Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Level 3 qualification.

If you are considering a social care career, Amie emphasises the importance of:

  • Being open minded
  • Being confident in the choices you make
  • Building relationships with families of the people you support
  • Building strong communication skills with colleagues, the people she supports and their families

When asked the most rewarding part of her job Amie said:

Seeing the people we support enjoy themselves and get to do what they want to do.
