Become a Gig Buddy in West Lothian

Posted 05/11/2020

Gig Buddies West Lothian has been getting people with a learning disability out to local gigs, and beyond, for over three years. We have 35 members and a team of local volunteers.

Our members and volunteers share a wide range of interests, and the gigs they’ve been going to range from Theatre, Football, Cinema and live music, whatever their ‘gig’ is.

We moved online at the start of lockdown and have hosted regular events; open mic nights, DJ night, Live music, and we have regular zoom chats to keep in touch, and we held a three day online festival in August. We are all looking forward to getting out once everything is safe to do so.

You’ve made my lockdown, it’s been something to look forward to – Richie

Gig Buddies pair adults with a learning disability with local volunteers who share the same interests, to get out to events that they both enjoy. We have projects running in West Lothian, Edinburgh and Glasgow (operated by UK charity, Thera Trust). We have buddies who go for walks, coffees, football, galleries, theatre, and those who’s shared love lies in music, or dancing, from jiving to the mosh pit!

I’ve had a great experience with Gig Buddies doing lots of different things with my gig buddy. We’ve been to many events and the Gig Buddies experience has definitely had a positive impact on both our lives – Gig Buddies volunteer

Gig Buddies are looking forward to returning to their regular social calendar, and getting out to gigs, when it’s safe to do so. They are now recruiting volunteers to create new Gig Buddies pairings to enjoy gigs together online or at a safe distance. They’re accepting applications now and will be running their next online training session soon.
