Robin takes dream trip to Canada to see Niagara Falls

Posted 26/08/2025

Robin is a person supported by The Camden Society who has always had a sense of adventure and a desire to travel – in the past he has visited Graceland. After deciding he wanted to visit Niagara Falls The Camden Society worked with him to organise the trip and ensure he would be supported through it.

Robin flew from Heathrow on a long haul transatlantic flight. On the flight they passed over Greenland before landing in Quebec and journeying from there to Toronto. Through liaising with airport authorities they were able to ensure they received assistance upon departure and arrival for a smooth journey.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to Niagara Falls, a grouping of three waterfalls known as the Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and the American Falls. The largest of the three, Horseshoe Falls, is one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world at about 2,600 feet wide and 167 feet high.

They braved the mist of the falls with a boat trip. The support worker who accompanied Robin said:

It was exhilarating and emotional. So much so that it left Robin speechless, and that’s a rare moment.

His support worker, who accompanied him, ensured he was always as comfortable as he could be and made to feel safe. Her pre-existing relationship with him and firsthand knowledge of how to deliver support to him enabled her to guide him through some difficult moments, such as sleepless nights, and ensure the trip was everything he wanted.

The trip was also an opportunity for Robin to see an old friend, Kim, that he met on a visit to Graceland 13 years ago. They kept in touch as pen friends, bonding over their shared love of Elvis. Robin went to Canada to stay with Kim ten years ago and since has wanted to go again. Robin met Kim’s husband, a talented guitar maker and Elvis fan, who performed some of Robin’s favourite songs for him.

Robin’s support worker spoke about what the trip meant to Robin:

For ten years all Robin has wanted to do is go back to Canada to visit Kim and to be a part of making that happen for him was amazing. We had a best interest meeting and he said he wanted me to go with him which was lovely. He saw the falls and his friend and went to see all the sights. He had an amazing time.
