“You can’t compare the change he’s made” – David’s Story

Posted 19/06/2025

In today's blog we find out about the importance of building positive relationships and how David has made positive changes since becoming supported by Aspire.

David became supported by Aspire Living four years ago after not getting the support he needed where he was previously living. He initially said he’d only be living at his current home for one week but four years later, he is still living there and has been making many positive changes!

Before being supported by a previous provider, David used to live with his parents until they unfortunately passed away. Therefore, he’s found the transition into supported living difficult, including meeting new people like housemates and support staff.

However, through the support of his staff team, David has been making massive strives in many areas of his life. One of the biggest changes is that he has become more trusting of his support staff and his housemates. For example, David previously never ate meals with his housemates, whereas now, he eats with them and has become more sociable. This has allowed him to start maintaining friendships, something he struggled with previously. He likes to purchase gifts for people and is expressive how much he appreciates them.

David has also been enjoying visiting his favourite local garden centre. David has lived in the same area his whole life so everyone at the centre knows his name. Overall, David now goes out three to four times a week! This is a huge difference from when he first being supported by us, when he didn’t go out or socialise very often.

David’s Team Coordinator, Maz said:

You can’t compare the change he’s made.

The positive changes and progress David has been making is great to see and shows how much person-centred support and building strong relationships can make a difference. David has built a strong relationship with one of his support staff and his team coordinator, Maz, says it’s like they’ve known each other for forever.

Maz, summed it up well when she said:

Positive relationships are built on trust and genuine care.
