When Andre was first referred to Unity Futures, Unity Works’ wellbeing and employment programme working with young people with a learning disability, he was feeling quite shy and wasn’t sure what direction career wise to take.
Through weekly catch ups with his employment advisor, he began exploring his interests and job searching options. After discovering a passion for cooking and with a keen interest in gaining experience working in a kitchen, his employment advisor introduced him to the idea of volunteering with the Be Enriched Castle Canteen, an organisation that prepares free three course meals for the local community using surplus donated food.
From starting with a casual interest in cooking and having limited skills, his time on this placement has meant that he is now able to prepare a main meal and assist in inducting new volunteers. Of Andre’s time at Be Enriched, one of his colleagues said: ‘[Andre] is continually working hard and gaining more and more confidence in preparing the meals! (I felt like a proud parent last week)’.
Over time, he grew in confidence and managed to secure two interviews for paid positions as well as completing a Level 2 Food Hygiene Course which will further enhance his CV.
Since starting on this journey, Andre has shown commitment to progressing himself and continue learning. He’s attended money management classes and simultaneously used the opportunity to understand more about using the tube, as previously he didn’t feel confident travelling independently. He’s also stretched himself in signing up to further training outside of his comfort zone. He completed a 3-month Entry Level IT course back in the Autumn and is pursuing a Level 1 English course at college.
With growing confidence in taking on new training and upskilling opportunity and proven ability to take on additional responsibilities, Andre is well placed to take the next step towards achieving his employment goals. Watch this space!
