Andrew hits key fitness goal, aims for 2027 Paralympics

Posted 05/06/2025

Andrew completed his first 'Race for Life' and has taken part in the Devonport Swimming Competition in hopes of Paralympic success!

Andrew is a young man supported by Thera South West who has always had a passion for fitness and sport. Andrew competed in his first Race For Life event on Sunday 1 June, setting a new personal best and completing the course in 33 minutes. Once Andrew set this goal, he and his support worker Joanna developed a training plan and have been working hard running around the lanes in Dartington and along the coast in Paignton. On top of running, Andrew has recently reignited his passion for swimming.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic Andrew was competing in swimming to a high standard but due to the restrictions put in place he had to stop training. Andrew recognises how much swimming, particularly open water swimming, lifts his mood and he was keen to begin training again. He has now started training with the ‘Masters’ at the Devonport Royal Club at Plymouth Life Centre where he focuses on stroke technique, endurance, and working on times for competitions.

He recently took part in the ‘Devonport Swimming Competition’ where he achieved the following:

  • 50 metres backstroke – 44 seconds
  • 50 metres butterfly – 32.12 seconds
  • 50 metres breaststroke – 39.22 seconds
  • 100 metre breaststroke – 87 seconds

Andrews coach Paul said that he made an excellent effort and that his dives and turns are coming along very well. Andrew competes in the S14 category and is hoping to continue training and compete in the Paralympics in 2027!

As mentioned above, Andrew also enjoys open water swimming, finding being outdoors, exercising, and being close to nature to be good for his mental and physical health. With his support worker Joanna, Andrew has gone swimming at Elberry Cove, Devils Point, Plymouth Hoe, and Paignton Beach, all without wetsuits!
