Earlier this year, we shared updates from Anna’s first rotation as a supported intern at Royal Borough of Greenwich. Following this, we are back for an update sharing achievements across Anna’s four additional rotations at the Council, each giving her the chance to explore different roles and environments.
One of her placements was with the Disabled Children and Young People Service, where she worked alongside Occupational Therapy teams. During this time, she even had the opportunity to shadow project focused on adapting a tenant’s home to make it more accessible, giving her insight into how practical changes can improve people’s independence and quality of life. Anna also contributed to a website mapping exercise, helping review whether the existing local offer site was user-friendly.
Alongside this rotation, Anna also spent time with the Co
rporate Receptionist team, greeting and directing visitors, as well as gaining an understanding of how a professional front-of-house service operates.
In her third rotation, Anna expanded into a Customer Service Apprentice role. Here, she grew in confidence, particularly when handling responsibilities such as distributing internal and external post and using the phone to confirm deliveries. She also gained experience in helping facilitate council meetings between residents and teams, shadowing colleagues, and learning the first steps of how helplines and internal systems work.
For the other half of the week, Anna worked with Punchdrunk, a local immersive theatre company. In this creative environment, she supported health and safety processes such as signing people in and out, while also getting a behind-the-scenes look at how props are used and maintained. As a result of this placement, Anna is now considering volunteering with Punchdrunk after her supported internship ends, alongside continuing support with Unity Works Supported Employment programme.
I felt like I was learning and doing something new when I was on all of my rotations.
Looking ahead, Anna is looking to try different roles and gain as much experience as possible before deciding on any long term plans. With a keen interest in the creative industry, particularly within a theatre environment. She’s also interested in exploring customer service roles but also wants to continue exploring creative opportunities, particularly around props and staging. For now, her goal is to try different roles and gain as much experience as possible before deciding on what a future career might look like.
Unity Works delivers Supported Internships in Greenwich and Lambeth. These are a structured, work-based study programme for young people with SEND, who have an education, health and care (EHC) plan.
