One of the many highlights this year has been seeing David develop meaningful connections within his local community through his passion for motorbikes.
David had been aware of a local Bike Café for a while but never had the opportunity to visit. It was Chrissie, David’s Support Manager, who first went and discovered a warm, friendly and inviting atmosphere. Knowing the welcome he would receive, she encouraged David to go. When David arrived, he was warmly welcomed by fellow bike enthusiasts, including the café owner, who also owns the adjoining bike shop. The owner has taken a strong liking to David, always making time to make his favourite chicken and chips, and coming over to speak with him and make him feel comfortable.
Regular visits have given David the opportunity to meet new people, enjoy great food, and spend time admiring an impressive collection of lovingly restored motorbikes. These experiences have enabled him to pursue an interest he is passionate about while building friendships and becoming an active part of his local community.
The bikers have welcomed me into their group and been kind and nice to me when I went to Bike Night. They make me feel like I can be myself and they accept me for who I am. They laugh at my jokes and invite me to other events.
This is a wonderful example of how supporting people to follow their interests can create opportunities for greater inclusion, independence and belonging—helping people to lead great lives within their communities.
David himself agrees, he had this to say about his time at the café:
I feel welcome and comfortable in this environment; I enjoy speaking to the owner and people watching. The owner makes a point of coming out to me, to take my order and payment as the cafe section is in an American style caravan inside the garage. It is a very trendy place! I like the decorations and this is local so it’s easy to get to. I can get my wheelchair in here, no problem.
