Good News Story: Tom’s Journey to Paid Employment at the Bedford Cat Café

Posted 09/07/2026

Tom finds a paid job he loves working with cats in a cat café.
Thera East Anglia’s supported employment programme is built on a simple but powerful belief: everyone deserves the chance to access meaningful, fulfilling work. Our Supported Employment Manager, Terri, brings this mission to life every day—championing people with a learning disability, nurturing their confidence, and helping them build the skills and connections that open doors to new opportunities.

Today, we’re celebrating a fantastic milestone for one of our determined job seekers: Tom, who has successfully secured paid employment after months of dedication, growth, and passion at the Bedford Cat Café.

A Passion for Animals

Tom has always had a deep love for animals. After completing his Level 2 Animal Care qualification at the College of West Anglia, he wanted to use his skills in a role that allowed him to work closely with animals. Although he had previous paid experience in customer‑facing jobs, he found that environment wasn’t the right fit for him. Working with animals — where he feels calm, focused, and gets a strong sense of purpose — was where he truly felt fulfilled.

A Determined Partnership

Tom began working with Terri in October 2025 with a clear goal: to find paid or voluntary work with animals. Together, they contacted more than 20 animal‑based employers. Despite their efforts, many organisations were unable to offer volunteer placements or paid roles. The animal‑care sector does not have many jobs available, with many young people leaving college with similar qualifications and looking for roles.

But Tom and Terri didn’t give up.

Discovering the Bedford Cat Café

In his spare time, Tom and his family often visited the Bedford Cat Café — around 45 minutes from his home. Tom loved the atmosphere, and most importantly, the cats. Inspired, Tom and Terri reached out to the café, who invited him to complete an application and attend an interview.

Tom was offered a weekly volunteering role, supporting the cats at the start or end of each day. He made the most of his new role — leaving home at 6am to arrive for a 7am shift, ensuring the cats had everything they needed.

Since December 2025, Tom has been a dedicated volunteer, learning new tasks, working independently, and always making time for to look after and play with the cats he cares so much about.

From Volunteer to Valued Team Member

In March 2026, Tom received wonderful feedback from the café owner. Staff were impressed with his reliability, his gentle approach with the cats, and the pride he took in his work. His contribution had become so important to the team that he was invited to apply for a paid position.

Not only does this show Tom’s hard work, but it also shows his passion for animal care, and the supportive partnership between him and Terri.

A Well‑Deserved Success

Tom’s journey shows what’s possible when determination meets the right support. He has carved out a role that aligns with his strengths, his interests, and his long‑term goals. We are incredibly proud of everything he has achieved and excited to see him continue to thrive in his new paid role at the Bedford Cat Café.

Tom’s story is a reminder that meaningful employment changes lives — and that with the right opportunities, everyone can shine.
