Thera East opens accessible beach hut

Posted 05/08/2019

People supported by Thera East have reached their fundraising target to open a new accessible beach hut in Dovercourt.

People supported by Thera East set up a project to open an accessible beach hut in Dovercourt nearly 4 years ago, now known as ‘109 Dolphins Bay’. Through their fundraising efforts they have finally seen their vision come to life.

This opportunity has allowed people to have an accessible beach hut, with keys to a fully equipped changing facility which is just a stone’s throw away from the beach hut. These facilities are essential for some of the people we support in order to spend a full day or even a few hours outside of their home.

The group fundraised through tombolas, dance-a-thons and coffee mornings, family and community donations. The people supported were able to paint the new hut to make sure it was ready for the opening, which took place on 7th June 2019.

The local community were also instrumental in enabling Thera East to open the beach hut, donating kitchen appliances, tables and chairs and bunting amongst many other kind donations.

The hut is open plan, with a ramp for wheelchairs and has everything needed for a pleasant day out. This is somewhere people can get together for team/family/friend bonding time over tea and cakes, play some games or just relax with the sound of the sea in the distance.

Bridie Stanford, Executive Assistant and Graham Skidmore, Service Quality Director at Thera East, said: “It has been lovely getting together with everyone to paint the hut, then stopping for chips by the sea. We can’t wait to see what the future holds and we hope everyone enjoys using the beach hut as much as we have enjoyed setting it up.”

The hut is available to hire and will allow the ground rent to be paid. If any money is left over, this will create opportunities for summer barbeques, parties and other social events.
